What Are Paddle Boards?
Surfing has challenged the limits of every waterman's strength and skill. The Hawaiians were amongst the first to have been spotted playing amonst the waves on their long surfboards. While the spirit of surfing has remained the same, variations have been introduced by a progressive group of surfers. Paddle surfing, also known as beach boy surfing, has a history of enthralling people with its noble rhythm and grace. The sport found its beginnings with the Beach Boys of the 1960s who would paddle their long surfboards out into the ocean to take pictures of tourists. Over time, other surfers noticed and experimented with stand up paddle surfing as a way of training and fine-tuning their skills. With this history, paddle surfing has its infamous legends. John Zabotock, also known as the oldest beach boy surfer in the world, is a source of inspiration to many who have embraced the sport. Since the 1940s he has been found stand up paddle surfing along the shores of Hawaii.

The evolution of longboard, shortboard, and paddleboard designs has culminated in the development of today's stand up paddle boards. When paddle boarding first began, the traditional surf board designs of 50/50 rails and single fin setups had evolved into smaller, lighter, and faster surfboards. Now, with the materials available today, and new composite construction techniques, shapers are pushing the existing limits of weight, strength, and shape of SUP boards thus leading to a higher level of performance amongst SUP surfers and greater enjoyment for those just looking to have a great time on the water.
Advantages
Excercise
Health and fitness experts all over the world are quickly catching up with the outstanding cross-training benefits of stand up paddle boards, with several personal trainers in France, England, Australia and the US incorporating the sport into their sessions. Says Nate Burgoyne, editor of Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine: "SUPS is a superior core workout on both flat water and amongst the waves. It is an ideal sport for cross-training as it brings together legs, back, feet, arms, neck and stomach muscles in a graceful display of core strength and balance.

While riding a paddleboard, the average male can burn between 800 and 1,000 calories per hour, with the average female burning about 500 to 700 calories per hour. On a treadmill or an elliptical machine, the average male burns between 600 to 700 calories and the average female burns between 300 to 400 calories.

Staying Dry
Of the many newfound benefits of stand up paddling, staying fairly dry and warm is undoubtedly one of them.

Surfing
The advantages of surfing with stand-up paddleboards is the ease of cruising up and down a beach, catching waves, and paddling right back out with ease. No pop-ups or prone paddling involved. Since the maneuverability is less than that of other surfboards, forgiving small waves are the perfect match. These things are so big they will catch the tiniest wave.
Lakeshore Paddle Board Information
Materials and Construction:
All of our boards are made with high quality solid EPS foam cores, 1/4" wood stringers, eco-friendly composite epoxy resins, and multiple fiberglass or wood veneer laminations. They are completely custom hand shaped, hand laminated, and hand finished. Vacuum bag technology is also utilized.

Recommended Paddle Lengths:
Paddle shafts are designed to be custom-cut for a personal fit. The correct length is very much determined by the use. All measurements are added to the individual paddleboarder's overall height. Add 8"-10" if you are mainly paddling in flat water with some occasional mild surf use. Add up to 12" for racing and ocean touring. Add 6"-8" if you spend most of your time in high performance surf and have developed good paddle strength. Paddle length is a personal thing but from our experience the measurements above work best for MOST people. If unsure - start out longer - you can always shorten it (but never lengthen your paddle, again). A longer shaft puts less strain on your back (but may aggravate shoulder injuries). Most people start out spending more time on flat water, where a longer paddle works best.

Air Vent and Maintenance:
All EPS boards contend a large percentage of air, (the EPS foam core consists of 98% air bubbles) confined within the sealed and water tight skin of the board. The volume of the "trapped" air increases considerably when exposed to higher temperatures and altitude changes, and may cause severe de-laminations or leaks. Consequently it is essential to allow the pressure (excess air) to escape by the use of an air vent. The black vent element (plastic bolt) must be very carefully installed as it is easily broken. It is tightened just slightly more than hand tight, just enough to compress the O-ring. This bolt head is designed in two separate parts: an upper half (cap) and a lower half. When installed properly, the lower half will be fixed and the upper half of the bolt head (cap) will be loose and be able to move slightly back and forth about an 1/8 of an inch by using your fingers. This is completely normal and should not be tightened any further. Do not wax over the vent. Keep wax away from the recessed area. Rinse the vent after use with fresh water using low pressure to remove any salt crystals, sand. etc from the recessed area. The vent element should be replaced every two years if constantly used, or if it is damaged in any way. Contact LPC for replacement elements. Venting the board will greatly reduce problems with EPS/hollow-core heat and altitude expansion, but it is not an immunization. Keep the board out of direct sun exposure, and use a reflective bag. Do not keep the board in a closed vehicle during high temperatures.
